Biology of bamboo nesting stingless bees of southwest China

چکیده
More than 550 stingless bee species have been found in the tropical and subtropical areas across world. Different inhabit various types of nests, such as tree hollows, walls, lime stone crevices, or even co-nest with other live creatures ants termites underground. These cavity-nesting habits make it difficult to estimate colony size bees. Stingless native southwest China are sympatric many bamboo, straight shape bamboo provides an easier method volume preference selecting trap nests. Here, we reported nest characteristics measurement its height, diameter, entrance size, a calculation inner capacity determine nesting bamboo. The results showed that two species, Lepidotrigona flavibasis Tetragonula gressitti, all bamboo; was preferred by T. gressitti around 10.71 ± 2.38 cm2, compared L. for small area 1.33 0.25 cm2. Accordingly, internode 2272.37 126.7 mL 4493.35 466.91 chosen respectively. Interestingly, both living rather dead site. This study indicates cheap easily accessible could be used nests bees, volumes different suggest what sizes swarms might be. Selecting proper species-specific benefits us researching, conserving, keeping

Social insects have many defence mechanisms against pests and pathogens. One of these is hygienic behaviour, which has been studied in detail in the honey bee, Apis mellifera Hygienic honey bee workers remove dead and diseased larvae and pupae from sealed brood cells, thereby reducing disease transfer within the colony. Stingless bees, Meliponini, also rear broods in sealed cells. We investigat...
متن کاملAbsence of Leishmaniinae and Nosematidae in stingless bees
Bee pollination is an indispensable component of global food production and plays a crucial role in sustainable agriculture. The worldwide decline of bee populations, including wild pollinators, poses a threat to this system. However, most studies to date are situated in temperate regions where Apini and Bombini are very abundant pollinators. Tropical and subtropical regions where stingless bee...
متن کاملTaxonomic exploration of Neotropical Microdontinae (Diptera: Syrphidae) mimicking stingless bees.
Several species of Neotropical Microdontinae (Diptera: Syrphidae) are mimics of stingless bees. Most of these species have previously been grouped in Ubristes Walker, 1852, with Carreramyia Doesburg, 1966, Hypselosyrphus Hull, 1937 and Stipomorpha Hull, 1945 treated as synonyms in recent literature. The species of the recently described genus Mermerizon Reemer, 2013 are also treated in the pres...
متن کاملSequence and expression pattern of the germ line marker vasa in honey bees and stingless bees
Queens and workers of social insects differ in the rates of egg laying. Using genomic information we determined the sequence of vasa, a highly conserved gene specific to the germ line of metazoans, for the honey bee and four stingless bees. The vasa sequence of social bees differed from that of other insects in two motifs. By RT-PCR we confirmed the germ line specificity of Amvasa expression in...
